No more ads :)

April 22nd, 2008

First off, I never intended to run this site off of advertising revenue, because I’d actually like to be able to sell a product that people will actually want to buy. Besides, serving random ads that are not highly focused towards your audience is fairly pointless unless your site is “easy” to find and has some sort of high value that brings in lots of lurkers looking for specific information.

Adding the ads was simply an experiment - on a couple of levels.
The 12 hours or so we did have ads on the site did give me a bit of marketing “research” about the design of the site in its current form. Apparently you guys noticed the ad - which will be remembered for when I do start selling products people will want. Somehow I managed to get 3 clicks, probably from some poor sucker looking to buy tickets to a Celine Dion show. (Or maybe you were just interested in reading dirty jokes?)

One other thing a lot of you might not realize is that by placing the ads up, I did get Google to come and thoroughly index the entire site, which we need to have happen if we want this community to continue to grow. If people can’t find the site, we have issues. :)

It’s also likely that Google wouldn’t have continued to serve us ads, as I’m fairly certain the content we have here violates their AdSense program TOS. (Mainly the gambling content, although you can be terminated for “adult” content as well…)

Anyway, believe it or not, I have been listening to all of you guys, (I am a natural critic after all) and I do have plans that my roommate and I are hashing out so we will be able to deliver to you guys a product that I’m confident will sell, as well as bring new people into the community.

Just to let you guys know of my plans for the immediate short term, I plan on integrating the blogs much more cohesively with the forums, so if you are browsing the forums, you will be able to easily see that there are new updates on the blogs. Right now we have a hodge podge of ideas, but that doesn’t work very well for a community like this. Ease of information and easy access to the content you guys want to see is key to seeing a community like this succeed.

Anyway, I think I’ve rambled long enough, and I do actually need to write this exciting paper on the 1986 tax reform bill I’ve been putting off for the last 2 days. Now…. how to spend the $.76 Google owes me!

Cheers,
Josh

Blogs, blogs, blogs

April 22nd, 2008

As some of you may have noticed I added a new user group to the forums today - Blog Team

I plan on implementing some new features to the site to make the blogs easier to access and read from within the forum.

Here is a “wishlist” if you will, of what I plan on working on.

Phase 1: kipin.net blog style, including integrated sidebar for easier forum access and blog movement between the various kipin.net sites.

Phase 2: I havn’t really looked into this at all, but I want to show forum users when a new post is made to a blog. My basic design ideas would be to have the blog title, and if it has new posts since your last view to indicate that on the sidebar.

For anyone interested in starting a blog, feel free to shoot me an email [kipin.net (at) gmail.com], pm me on the site, or aim me at kipindotnet. I’m not only looking for poker bloggers, so if you have an interesting idea, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sidebar

March 6th, 2008

Hey, look a sidebar.
Email me if there are any problems with how it displays… I’m still trying to figure out how to get rid of all that white space as you scroll down the messages, but that should be fixed soon.

I know none of you care, but it’s here.

Official kipin.net announcements will most likely be made to this site so don’t bookmark this site, and make sure never to come back here to see what is going on.

Cheers!
